#K-Hugot: K-Ballads that Hit You Right in the Feels

Single Awareness Day (noun) – also known as S.A.D. Another occasion sarcastically celebrated on February 14, either as a result of unrequited confessions or tearful goodbyes

Not everyone lie on a bed of roses (and chocolates) on Valentine’s Day. Whatever status of our hearts may be, the KStreetManila team compiled a list of K-ballads that are just as lalim as the Filipino hugot. Feel free to sing out your feels to these songs at a noraebang or grab a fistful of tissues and bawl your eyes out.

Davichi – “Don’t Say Goodbye”

To those unfamiliar with Davichi, these powerhouse ladies have been in the Korean music industry for 8 years already! The beat may not be as sad as the lyrics, but the song actually gives a picture of fear and pain of a sad break-up.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

Please don’t say those words tonight / Why did you leave me? / I’m so hurt, my heart hurts, tears are rising / We can’t say goodbye yet, don’t open those lips any wider / Don’t say goodbye

2AM – “I Wonder If You Hurt Like Me”

It’s sad that members Jo Kwon, Seulong, Changmin and Jinwoon decided to go their separate ways, but their music as 2AM will always live on. Being the sentimental brothers of 2PM, they express the pain of no longer being with the person they love as said in between the lines.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

Because I smile every day / Because I show my smiles, / They think I am happy / But how can I smile, how can I smile without you / I smile and I smile but tears flow again

DGNA – “Lady”

Dae Guk Nam Ah (DGNA) is definitely one of those groups that deserve recognition with this powerful ballad of a man begging his “lady” not to leave him. He promises he will be a better version of himself and would want to stay with her for a very long time.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

For a long time / Till the end / So that we won’t break up / Let’s be together for a long time / So please don’t leave me

Jung Jae Wook – “Goodbye”

We travel back in time with Jung Jae Wook’s “Goodbye”, which was released in 2001 as part of his second album. As the title hints, the song is about letting the person go and letting her know that he loved her from the deepest depths of his heart.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

Farewell, my special person. I was happy. / But still know this, / that even if in the end my love is not enough compared to your love right now, / it isn’t shallow.

TVXQ – “Love in the Ice”

“Love in the Ice” captures beautifully the amazing vocals of Jaejoong, Junsu, Yoochun, Changmin and Yunho and how they do sound beautifully as five. Released both in Korean and in Japanese, “Love in the Ice” speaks about a love that can even melt the hardest of hearts.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

Just like the star that doesn’t leave the dark night sky / We’ll carry this dream forever / together with love and trust / If I were that person / Once again, I’d hug your hardened heart / Tightly in my arms forever

Kim Kwang Seok – “Around 30”

Some may already be at beautiful ages of getting married but are still looking for true love. Kim Kwang Seok’s “Around 30” is a timeless classic of an empty void left by the love of his youth. Recently in an episode of Immortal Songs 2, wherein the singers paid tribute to the music of Kim Kwang Seok, Roy Kim delivered a poignantly beautiful version of the classic.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

Even though seasons come again / But where is my love that left? / Though I’m not sending you away / I’m not going away to return / I forget little by little / What I thought was a lingering love / Again another day passes by / I’m living with parting everyday / I’m living with parting everyday

Park Hyo Shin – “Wild Flower”

If you had already been actively watching Korean dramas since 2005, you would probably recognize Park Hyo Shin’s signature raspy and emotional voice for theme song, “Snow Flower” of “I’m Sorry, I Love You”. Released after four years of hiatus, “Wild Flower” displays the emotional majesty that only Park Hyo Shin can do. Everything was perfect with this song – from the simplicity of the black-and-white music video to the sincerity of the lyrics

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

Only good memories, only a longing heart / On the path where you left me / I’m standing alone / Only until I can forget you, until I will be alright / I’ll swallow my tears and at the end of my wait / I will bloom once again

Kim Bum Soo – “I Miss You”

Remember Kwon Sang Woo and Choi Ji Woo from “Stairway to Heaven”? Probably one of the most heart-wrenching Korean dramas ever, Kim Bum Soo further adds to the emotion on waiting for a person to come back. Doesn’t this already make you cry?

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

The memory of being madly in love / I find you in those memories / We couldn’t have been more in love / I won’t choose this for you / I will never let it happen / But I really miss you

BeBe Mignon – “One Woman” (Originally sung by Kim Jong Kook as “One Man”)

One of the lesser known tracks in the drama, Secret Garden, “One Woman” was originally sung by Kim Jong Kook (“Spartakook” of Running Man) as “One Man”. Interestingly, this song broke out when news about Kim Jong Kook and Yoon Eun Hye began to surface. Does this song actually speak of Kim Jong Kook’s feelings back in the day? We’ll probably never know.

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

There’s a man. Who loves you so much. / There’s a man. Who can’t even say I love you. / By your side I put my hand out and / at a path were you can always reach me / I, who cherishes you more than myself, am with you.

Baek Ji Young – “Like Being Hit by a Bullet”

What is not a K-hugot playlist without Baek Ji Young? The Queen of Korean OSTs easily can make even stones cry with her beautiful voice. (Choosing a single song to be included in this list was so difficult!) Her secret in singing ballads?  You should have gone through a lot. #KHugotQueen

Notable K-Hugot Lines:

In this bruised chest, / Our memories are overflowing / Even though I try hold onto them, / Even if I block my chest, / They all slip though my fingers

Cheska De Ocampo
Always up and about, Cheska was once asked if she always meets different people every single day. Well – not always – but almost because it is part of her job description and because she is actively involved in church. Having the opportunity to join KStreetManila, she combines two of her loves – writing and Korean culture. During her downtime (which somehow rarely happens), she is either scrolling through Twitter, writing for her blog, trying to be fit, reading a good book, or appreciating beauty and fashion.
