Award-winning girl group GFriend held their “L.O.L” album showcase in Manila on September 4, 2016 at the Theatre at Solaire.
Composed of Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji, GFriend debuted on 2015 with the promotional track “Glass Bead.” They released two more promotional tracks under a high school concept, “Me Gustas Tu” and “Rough”, the latter earning them their first music show award. For this year, they earned a total of 29 music show wins (for promotional tracks “Rough” and “Navillera”), the most number of music show wins from an artist within a year.
The showcase was a perfect opportunity for the girls to have fun with Filipino Buddies. Here are some of the best moments of the night:
1. GFriend’s intro performance
Wearing their signature high school uniforms, the girls started the night with two songs—“Glass Bead”, their debut song, and “Luv Star”, from their third EP “Snowflake.” GFriend felt the love from Filipino Buddies who cheered loudly, and waved their banners and pen lights. After the intro performance, the girls introduced themselves one by one, the introductions almost impossible to hear due to the loud cheers from the fans.
2. The fun talk portion
Filipino Buddies got to know the girls better during the talk portion where they answered a variety of questions from the hosts. Questions included their favorite body part (maknae Umji quipped her favorite body part is her skin; she’s the baby of the group, so she rarely gets acne), their favorite food (where the host told the crowd to quiet down so that they know what to feed the girls), the most memorable gift they have received, and what they do during their free time.
Asked about what’s most important for them and what gives them energy, GFriend unanimously answered, “Buddies!” on both questions, to more loud cheers from the fans.
3. “Rough” two times faster
Remember that episode from Weekly Idol where GFriend danced to “Rough” in twice the speed of the music? The girls gave a repeat performance of that after the talk portion. And just like in that Weekly Idol episode, GFriend proved they can dance in sync any of their songs, to any speed.
4. The staring contest with fans
GFriend played a staring contest with randomly selected fans, with the contestants staring at the cameras without trying to blink. The loser gets to do aegyo as penalty. Eunha and Umji led a demonstration, to which Eunha won. Umji was about to do aegyo as penalty, but the host pointed out that it was just a demo.
Then it was contest times! The girls tried to distract the fans into blinking by acting cute and giving flying kisses. Sowon, Eunha, Yuju, and SinB won the contest; Yerin tied with a fan; and Umji lost and finally did the aegyo the fans had clamored for after she lost in the demo.
5. GFriend’s performances
GFriend went backstage to change after the talk portion, then came back with performances to “Rough”, “Me Gustas Tu”, “One”, “White”, “Mermaid”, and “Gone With the Wind.” Filipino Buddies proved true to GFriend’s words of giving them energy through fan chants and singing along.
The girls’ parting messages were all words of thanks, with SinB mentioning that she would love to return to the Philippines. They ended the showcase by performing their latest promotional track, “Navillera.”
6. GFriend giving candies to the fans
After the showcase, the fans started to cheer for an encore. Suddenly, the lights came back, and GFriend emerged. They were holding baskets and started throwing candies to the audience. Fans sitting at the back scrambled to the front not only to get candies from the girls but also to interact with them once more before they bid goodbye the second time.
