Happy New Year, KStreetManila readers! 2017 has just started and we are already witnessing stellar comebacks, impressive debuts, and amazing performances, which are not only make headlines in South Korea but also around the world. And what a way to start the new year with S. Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon and Dino, collectively known as Seventeen (세븐틴) (no pun intended).
Seventeen sets themselves apart by performing in units of specialization – vocal, hip-hop, and performance. Through this method, they are deeply involved in composing, writing and choreographing their own songs – earning the recognition of being “self-producing” idols.
Prior to debut, Seventeen’s trainee days were already documented through Seventeen TV (released only online) and reality TV show, Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan. In May 2015, Seventeen finally released their first EP, 17 Carat, with Adore U as their title track. Fuse TV, a popular music and entertainment online magazine in the United States, were impressed by the boy group’s musicality that the boys made it to the K-Pop’s 2015 Rookies list. Their album debuted No. 8 in the Billboard World Albums chart and they were included in Billboard’s 10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015.
There was no way but up for this group as their second EP, Boys Be, was the highest selling album for a rookie that year and shot to No. 1 in the Billboard World Album chart. In addition, Seventeen was included in Billboard’s 21 under 21, an annual list of the hottest young stars such as 5 Seconds of Summer, Fifth Harmony, and many more.
This year is memorable for the group as their title track, Pretty U, from their first full-length album, Love & Letter, scored them their first music show win. A repackaged album followed suit with Very Nice as their lead single. With all that they’ve achieved, the boys embarked on an Asia tour with the Philippines as one of their stops.
As of to date, Seventeen came back with another solid EP, Going Seventeen, with Boom Boom as their flagship single. Upon its release, they’ve swept local and international music charts and was even given the Male World Performer Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.
It’s mind-blowing to think that Seventeen is barely a two-year old group with all the local and international recognition already under their belt. The future definitely looks bright for this multi-talented group.
