This Month’s Beat: Dreamcatcher

Here at KStreetManila, we’re bringing the Halloween early, as our Artist of the Month debuted with a punk rock goth image at the beginning of 2017. Composed of JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami, and Gahyeon, they are collectively known as Dreamcatcher (드림캐쳐).

JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami debuted with a group called Minx (밍스) with Why Did You Come to My Home? as their debut single in 2014. They came back the following year with Love Shake, which is a remake of labelmate Dal Shabet’s song of the same name.

It was in November 2016 when their label, Happy Face Entertainment, announced that the group will be coming back with a new name – Dreamcatcher. Also, they have a new sound, image, and additional members. On January 13, Dreamcatcher surprised everyone with a dark, heavy metal dance track, Chase Me, from their first single album, Nightmare.

Following their horror concept, they came back with Good Night from their second single album, Fall Asleep in the Mirror, last April. Their latest release, Fly High, was from their first extended play, Prequel, which was released last July.

Departing from the usual cute and bubbly image of girl groups, Dreamcatcher impresses by mixing horror concepts, J-Rock elements, and razor sharp choreography. Prequel, the group’s first mini-album, made it on the top spot of the US iTunes K-Pop Album Chart, while the title track ranked fifth in the US iTunes K-Pop Song Chart. This feat is remarkable as they join the ranks of well-known groups.

Other than their usual releases, Dreamcatcher also posts some amazing covers of some K-Pop and international artists. Some of the artists they have covered are WINNER, Bruno Mars, Seo Taiji and the Boys, Girls’ Generation, and Maroon 5.
