Countdown to #KPopRepublic2: Get to Know Cosmic Girls

Happy October, KStreetManila readers! October is going to be special for many K-Pop fans because many artists and groups will be coming over to the Philippines. One of these groups is Cosmic Girls.

Cosmic Girls, also known as WJSN, is a South Korean-Chinese girl group formed by Starship Entertainment and Yueha Entertainment. They debuted as 12 members on February 25, 2016, but added a 13th member (I.O.I.’s Yeonjung) on July of that same year.

According to leader Exy, the concept of Cosmic Girls is based on the universe. Just like there’s no set center in the universe, Cosmic Girls aims to become a “center from all sides” and help spread the Hallyu Wave worldwide.

The members are also split into four sub-units, which Exy says “suit the different vibes the members present”—Xuan Yi, Eunseo, and Yeoreum are in the Joy Unit; Luda, Dawon, Mei Qi, and Yeonjung are in the Natural Unit; Exy, SeolA, and Soobin are in the Sweet Unit; and Bona, Cheng Xiao, and Dayoung are in the Wonder Unit.

Musically, Cosmic Girls have experimented with different genres. The title tracks from their debut EP show two drastic musical styles, “Mo Mo Mo” showing off the girls’ cute and upbeat sides and “Catch Me” showing off their edgy, hip-hop sides.

They’ve also tried feminine concepts in their songs—”Secret” gave off a more mysterious aura, while “I Wish” is more schoolgirl whimsical.

Recently, they’ve tried concepts that showed their happier sides. “Happy” is upbeat, perfect to cheer up its listeners, while “Kiss Me” sounds refreshing, perfect for the summer.

Cosmic Girls has accomplished a lot since their debut. They held a solo concert last May. Their first full album Happy Moment, released June 2017, topped sales charts on its first day of release, earning three times the amount sold of their previous albums. They have also won several awards, such as “Rising Star Award” in the 2016 Asia Artist Awards, “EPK Discovery Award” in the 2016 Seoul Music Awards, “New Artist Award” in the 2016 Korean Entertainment Arts Awards, and recently “New Korean Wave Rising Hot Star Award” in the 2017 Soribada Best K-Music Awards.

Aside from music promotions, Cosmic Girls have also launched a reality show on Mnet. Titled, Would You Like Cosmic Girls, the girls’ activities (both onstage and offstage) are observed through the eyes of a die-hard fan.

Any Filipino U Jungs excited to see Cosmic Girls? Catch them on K-Pop Republic 2, happening on October 28 at Circuit Event Grounds in Makati. Tickets are available in all Ticketnet outlets.
