VIU Philippines is bringing Yook Sungjae for his Manila leg of his Paradise Fan Meeting, and we are excited to see him again! The idol has been in the country a couple of times as part of the group BTOB, but this is the first time he will be meeting his fans as a solo artist.
Whether you became a Sungjae fan during his idol days or by watching him in one of his dramas, this young man has charmed many fans around the world with his many roles in the entertainment industry. But if you know only one side of him, here’s a little crash course to get to know him better.
Before Sungjae starred in dramas, he started his career in the entertainment industry as an idol. In 2012, he debuted as part of the group BTOB with fellow members Eunkwang, Changsub, Minhyuk, Peniel, and Ilhoon. As a member of the group, he is the maknae (the youngest) and part of the vocal unit.
Sungjae also became a member of a couple of sub-units: here, he joins fellow BTOB members and vocalists Eunkwang, Changsub, and Hyunsik as part of BTOB-Blue.
He also became a part of the group Big Byung with GOT7’s Jackson and VIXX’s N and Hyuk.
A year after debuting in BTOB, Sungjae accepted offers to star in dramas. He made his drama debut in 2014 in Reply 1994 as Sungjoon, the little brother of Najung, which was played by Go Ara.
That same year, he landed his first leading role in Plus Nine Boys, playing Kang Mingoo, a 19-year-old judo athlete.
But Sungjae’s breakthrough came in 2015 when he starred in Who Are You: School 2015 and in The Village: Achiara’s Secret. The former won him Best Couple Award in the KBS Drama Awards with co-star Kim Sohyun, while the latter won him the New Star Award in the SBS Drama Awards.
Of course, who can forget Sungjae in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God? His role as Yoo Deokhwa landed him numerous awards in the Korea Drama Awards, including Rising Star, Best New Actor, and Star of the Year.
Not only does Sungjae have singing, dancing, and acting skills—he also knows how to host. In 2014, he became a presenter for the program A Song For You with Super Junior’s Kangin and f(x)’s Amber.
Then, in 2015, he became one of the main hosts for the music show Inkigayo.
The … Boyfriend?
Sungjae certainly showed that he is boyfriend (and husband?) material in the variety show We Got Married in which he got paired up with Red Velvet’s Joy. The two showed great chemistry on-screen that many hoped that they would actually get together in real life!
And when the couple reunited in the TV show Sugar Man, naturally netizens lost it! (I mean, same.)
And then they reunited for a CM for Fitz Beer! Are you loving this reunion?
Excited to see the many sides of Yook Sungjae? Catch him on his Paradise Fan Meeting on July 13 at the ABS-CBN Vertis Tent! Tickets are still available at Ticketworld.com and its outlets.
