This Month’s Beat: Wanna One

Unless you’ve been living under a rock in 2017, This Month’s Beat needs not much introduction. Each of them began as trainees with a dream to debut on the second season of the hit reality survival show, Produce 101. Now, they are dubbed as The Nation’s Boy Group, scoring numerous endorsement deals, selling out millions of albums, and landing multiple TV appearances.

Out of 101 participants, the nation’s producers chose Kang Daniel, Park Jihoon, Lee Daehwi, Kim Jaehwan, Ong Seongwoo, Park Woojin, Lai Guanlin, Yoon Jisung, Hwang Minhyun, Bae Jinyoung, and Ha Sungwoon to be the final members of the boy group Wanna One.

South Korea’s enthusiastic support for the boy group was an indicator that Wanna One was destined to do great things. On August 7, 2017, they were the first ever rookie K-Pop group to hold a sold-out debut showcase at the Gocheok Skydome, an arena with a capacity of over 16,000.

Their much-awaited debut album, 1X1=1 (To Be One), topped Gaon’s monthly chart in August. It also reached 600,000 pre-order copies prior to its release, making it the debut K-Pop album with the highest number of pre-orders. The title track “Energetic” topped all six major music charts: Melon, Genie, Bugs, Mnet, Naver and Soribada, achieving an all-kill status. Their other title track, “Burn It Up,” also did well on the charts.

Only a few months after, the boys came back with a more sentimental sound, “Beautiful”, while showcasing their acting chops in an eight-minute long music video.

Having a stellar year and raking in multiple awards in 2017, Wanna One continued their momentum with their second mini-album, 0+1=1 (I Promise You) early this year. The album surpassed 700,000 pre-orders, breaking the previous record set by the group.

Prior to the release of the album’s official title track, the group dropped the sweet and bubbly, “I Promise You (I.P.U.)”, on March 5, 2018, marking the 333rd day since the group’s first public appearance.  It won first place on two music shows despite not being promoted.

For their title track, “Boomerang”, Wanna One shed their usual youthful boy-next-door image for a more powerful and charismatic concept. The choreography was admittedly the most difficult one yet, with main vocal member Kim Jaehwan admitting that he cried while learning the choreography.

There seems to be no stopping the sensational 11-member boy group as the group released their latest album, 1÷x=1 (Undivided), which includes the comeback track “Light”. Ironically, this was the first time the members split into different units and collaborating with producers such as Dynamic Duo, Zico, Nell, and Heize.

Pro Tip: If you’ll be attending Wanna One’s concert this September, start memorizing and practicing Heize’s part in “Hourglass.” Trust us. You’ll need it.

Whether you’re a Wannable who’s been with them since Produce 101 (or maybe even during debut of Minhyun’s and Sungwoon’s respective groups) or just a new fan who accidentally stumbled into the fandom, here’s a run-down on each of the boys and why it’s hard to choose a bias among them.

Sungwoon

Real Name: Ha Sungwoon

Date of Birth: March 22, 1994

Position: Main Vocal

Agency: Star Crew (Hotshot, JBJ’s Roh Taehyun, UNB’s Ko Hojung)

Group: Hotshot

Why you should pick Sungwoon: Other than having a distinct singing voice, Sungwoon is also known for his flawless skin. At least he was kind enough to shared his skincare regimen with us. He’s your resident Tita Of Seoul, packing almost anything and everything he can need in his suitcase. He has also shown that he can do well in the jungle. Oh yeah, those Spongebob impressions of his are on-point. If you are of marrying age, his grandfather probably has a sign-up sheet somewhere…

Jinyoung

Real Name: Bae Jinyoung

Date of Birth: May 10, 2000

Position: Sub-vocal, Visual

Agency: C9 Entertainment (Cheetah, Juniel, Jung Joonyoung, Younha, Good Day)

Why you should pick Jinyoung: From a shy boy who can’t even look up from the ground to a confident performer, Jinyoung is the definition of character development. Although known for his visuals, Jinyoung showed he is an all-around performer. Despite seeming shy and quiet, Jinyoung is affectionate with his members and will not hesitate to roast his hyungs if given the chance, as proven on Happy Together.

Minhyun

Real Name: Hwang Minhyun

Date of Birth: August 9, 1995

Position: Lead Vocal

Agency: Pledis Entertainment (After School, NU’EST W, Seventeen, Pristin)

Group: NU’EST

Why you should pick Minhyun: We’re not going to lie, Minhyun is the epitome of husband material. Besides having the visuals, the stare, and vocals that can make you melt, Minhyun can also speak fluent Japanese, read a lot, and clean the house (Hwangderella and Hwang Butler anyone?). Despite seeming so serious as one of the experienced hyungs, Minhyun is also fond of skinship and being silly around his younger brothers. Really, where can you find someone so perfect?

Jisung

Real Name: Yoon Jisung

Date of Birth: March 8, 1991

Position: Leader, Sub-vocal

Agency: MMO Entertainment (Roy Kim, Park Boram, IN2IT)

Why you should pick Jisung: Jisung was initially known for being the hilarious guy with the best reaction faces. However, he won the hearts and votes of the people with both his singing voice and kindness—he was voted as the Produce 101 contestants’ one-pick and leader of Wanna One. He has the makings of a variety show star thanks to his wit, sense of humor, and knowledge of things the younger generation have no idea about. Not even kids can resist his charms, as seen on Return Of The Superman. Who doesn’t want a guy like that?

Guanlin

Real Name: Lai Guanlin

Date of Birth: September 23, 2001

Position: Maknae, Lead Rapper

Agency: Cube Entertainment (Hyuna, BTOB, Pentagon, CLC, Yoo Seonho, G-IDLE, Triple H)

Why you should pick Guanlin: Guanlin is living proof that hard work pays off despite not having many skills at the beginning. He has proven to be a good student, because he is always willing to learn and improve as in idol. Fun fact, he is amazingly smart – he placed second in school for his final exams back then. Basketball fans, you’ve just found a kindred spirit in him. Also, with his tall frame, who wouldn’t mistaken him as a runway model and fashionista? He looks amazing in Valentino.

Woojin

Real Name: Park Woojin

Date of Birth: November 2, 1999

Position: Main Rapper, Main Dancer

Agency: Brand New Music (Verbal Jint, San E, Mc Gree, Kanto, MXM)

Why you should pick Woojin: Woojin is your go-to guy to light up your gloomy day. He is both hilarious and talented. Although Woojin’s snaggletooth is also a charm point, what fans need to know and embrace about Woojin is his rather interesting dark part. Whether he’s impersonating T.O.P. or singing BoA’s “Only One” to a wall, Woojin made himself memorable.

Seongwoo

Real Name: Ong Seongwoo

Date of Birth: August 25, 1995

Position: Main Dancer, Lead Vocal

Agency: Fantagio (Astro, Weki Meki, Hello Venus)

Why you should pick Seongwoo: Seongwoo may have the face and talents of a Greek god, but he is “jeongmal, jinjja, real, daebak, heol, wanjeon” the textbook example of being extra. He is able to make everything funny, whether he’s folding his ears, singing about being hungry while wearing a face mask, or making haegeum noises with his mouth. Besides singing, dancing, and variety skills, Seongwoo can also act and play the drums. No wonder Produce 101 season 2 mentor Lee Seok Hoon’s wife is a fan

Jaehwan

Real Name: Kim Jaehwan

Date of Birth: May 27, 1996

Position: Main Vocal

Agency: None. (He will be under CJ E&M after his activities with Wanna One end.)

Why you should pick Jaehwan: Jaehwan made history as the first trainee without a company to make it to the final lineup of a Produce 101 group. Everyone was aware of his voice, guitar skills, and passion for music early in the competition, but he revealed his other charms such as his crazy laugh and being Wanna One’s self-proclaimed main everything. We don’t know how you can not fall in love after hearing him sing. Check him out singing Ailee’s “Don’t Touch Me,” Yoon Do Hyun’s “I’ll Forget,” and BTS’ “Truth Untold.”

Daehwi

Real Name: Lee Daehwi

Date of Birth: January 29, 2001

Position: Lead Vocalist

Agency: Brand New Music (Verbal Jint, San E, Mc Gree, Kanto, MXM)

Why you should pick Daehwi: Daehwi is a triple threat in a cute package. He can sing, dance girl group songs like a boss, and produce songs such as the Brand New Music boys’ audition song “Welcome To My Hollywood,” the Produce 48 concept battle song “See You Again,” and several MXM tracks. We love a young boy who is confident in who he is, as seen on Knowing Brothers. He gets bonus points for being the group’s resident English speaker.

Jihoon

Real Name: Park Jihoon

Date of Birth: May 29, 1999

Position: Lead Dancer, Sub Vocalist, Sub Rapper, Visual

Agency: Maroo Entertainment (Bonus Baby, KHAN)

Why you should pick Jihoon: Although Jihoon is responsible for making “jeojang” the hottest catchphrase in 2017, there is more to him than aegyo and winking. He has experience in popping, beatboxing, and acting – having appeared in dramas like Jumong and Iljimae as a child actor. Although netizens and fans call him a fashion terrorist for his questionable fashion choices, he makes the outfits work.

Daniel

Real Name: Kang Daniel

Date of Birth: December 10, 1996

Position: Main Dancer, Lead Rapper, Sub Vocalist, Center

Agency: MMO Entertainment (Roy Kim, Park Boram, IN2IT)

Why you should pick Daniel: Wanna One’s center can be cute and sexy at the same time, making him attractive to both noonas and younger fans. He is skilled at both B-boying and contemporary dance, showing his versatility as a dancer. A certified cat-lover, he has two cats named Peter and Rooney. Don’t let those broad 60cm shoulders fool you, because Daniel will literally laugh at anything and is a homebody who is scared of bugs! #relatable No wonder almost all of Korea is in love with him!

After a short visit for their Wanna Be Loved fanmeeting last year, the boys are coming back to Manila for their One The World Tour on September 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena!
