We now move on to the first of the boy groups who will be performing at MBC Show Champion! Other than EXO, most of these boy groups have members who are former survival show contestants.
MXM is a duo composed of Produce 101 contestants Lim Youngmin and Kim Donghyun from Brand New Music (Verbal Jint, San E, Yang Dail, Bumkey, MC Gree, Kanto, Kang Minhee, Wanna One’s Lee Daehwi and Park Woojin). MXM means “Mix and Match,” which represents the duo’s compatibility despite contrasting qualities. The name also means “More x More,” referring to their determination to develop as a duo.
Before debuting, the duo released two pre-debut tracks. Wanna One’s Lee Daehwi and Park Woojin participated in producing and writing lyrics for the lively and bright Good Day, alongside producers Dong Nehyeong, Won Younghyeon.
Meanwhile, Kim Donghyun and Kiggen produced the sweet, mellow sounding I Just Do. The lyrics are by Kim Donghyun and Lim Youngmin, and the arrangement is by Kiggen.
They debuted on September 6, 2017 with the song I’m The One, which was part of their first EP Unmix.
After that, the boys followed it up with their second EP Match Up on January 10, 2018, with the lead single Diamond Girl.
They then released a double-single called Rematch, with tracks Gone Cold, which shows off the members’ emotional side, and Love Me Now, which gives off a sexy vibe.
On August 14, 2018, the duo released their first full-length album More Than Ever. Title track YA YA YA is a chill trap track with a piano loops and trap beats, making it a summer-friendly song. A few days later, they also released the music video for Checkmate.
Both members of MXM are also part of project group YDPP with fellow Produce 101 alumni Jeong Sewoon and Lee Gwanghyun of Starship Entertainment. Its official meaning is Youth, Dream, Passion, and Purity, but the name originated from the four contestants’ initials (Youngmin, Donghyun, Ponyo [Sewoon], and Panghyun [Gwanghyun]). They debuted with Love It, Live It. Try spotting IZ*ONE’s Jang Wonyoung in the music video!
Now you’re more familiar with the duo’s history and songs, it’s time to get to know the charming boys of MXM!
Real Name: Lim Youngmin
Date of Birth: December 25, 1995
Position: Leader, Rapper, Dancer, Vocalist
Although Youngmin was born and raised in Busan for most of his life, not many people know that he also spent some of his childhood years in Singapore. Most Produce 101 season 2 viewers recognized Youngmin thanks to his red hair and the now famous alpaca dance. (Fun fact: Donghyun was the first to point out Youngmin’s resemblance to the animal.)
However, what made Youngmin a fan-favorite were his satoori and his leadership, especially when he helped his teammates who struggled in both dancing and rapping. Another fun fact: Youngmin knew the choreography to Infinite’s Be Mine during Produce 101 because he has performed it before, most notably for his JYP audition. Youngmin has both a soft and cute mode (Bbangmin to the fans) and a sexy mode (also known as God Zero). As if being handsome and kind wasn’t enough, Youngmin has also revealed his many academic achievements in both elementary and middle school during his appearance on Problematic Men with fellow ex-Produce 101 contestants HyeongseopXEuiwoong’s Lee Euiwoong and soloist Yoo Seonho. By the way, he also has a Practical Hanja Level 2 Certification which is the second-highest certification of Hanja comprehension.
In terms of fashion, Youngmin tends to prefer layering his clothes, but those with sharper eyes notice that he wears lots of plaid. This is because Youngmin’s family owns a tomato farm in Busan and his father tended to wear lots of plaid when working at the farm. This is also why his fans tend to call him a tomato.
For more recent appearances, you can catch up with Youngmin in the recently concluded Photo People 2, where he displayed his budding interest in photography with JYJ’s Jaejoong, INFINITE’s Woohyun, and Yoo Seonho, among others.
Real Name: Kim Donghyun
Date of Birth: September 17, 1998
Position: Maknae, Vocalist, Producer
Donghyun showed off his composing skills through his self-composed song Naturally Curly. Despite the lack of screen time he got on Produce 101 (no thanks to MNet), he made an impression thanks to his sweet vocals in I Know You Know and providing a lot of laughs while going up against NU’EST’s Baekho for the season’s edition of Punch King. Donghyun has also shown off his acting chops as the male lead in Lee Kang’s In Vain music video. In terms of unusual talents, did you know that he can also stare at a whirring electric fan without blinking?
Being the youngest one is nothing new to Donghyun, considering he has an older fraternal twin brother and an older sister. The more outgoing (read: shameless) half of the duo, Donghyun can often be seen hyping his friends, especially Jeong Sewoon and Lee Gwanghyun of YDPP. It’s not surprising that he also likes pointing out that his and Youngmin’s birthdays are exactly 100 days apart.
He may be the younger member of the duo, but Donghyun will not hesitate to judge Youngmin whenever the latter does something embarrassing. However, Donghyun is terribly scared of bugs that he walks toward the opposite direction from the bug until Youngmin captures it. #Relatable
During a previous live broadcast, after Filipino fans were inviting MXM to come to the Philippines, Donghyun revealed that he has visited the country before and even tried durian!
