This Month’s Beat: SHINee’s Onew

Many Shawols would remember the term “Onew-ache.” It is when you like Onew so much your heart aches. And that is exactly how it is for Shawols whose bias is this gentle and tofu-like leader.

Born Lee Jinki on December 14, 1989, Onew’s career began with SM Entertainment’s five-piece band SHINee. With his distinctly deep voice, he is the group’s lead vocals.

Apart from SHINee’s songs, he has lent his voice for a number of solo or duet tracks, such as In Your Eyes, Moonlight, Please Don’t Go (with SHINee’s Jonghyun), The Name I Loved and Play The Field (with Kim Yeon Woo), One Year Later (with then Girls’ Generation member Jessica), Vanilla Love (with Lee Hyun Ji), Starry Night (with Lee Jin Ah) and Lullaby (with Rocoberry).

He has also shared his lyric-writing skills into SHINee tracks such as Your Name, So Amazing, and Beautiful Life.

In various radio and music programs and solo stages during SHINee World Concerts, he has performed his rendition of other songs, including How Deep Is Your Love by Bee Gees, I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz, Lucky (with Lena) by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat, Can I Have This Dance (with f(x)’s Luna) by Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, Rainy Blue by Hideaki Tokunaga, and—perhaps the most iconic—the operatic Nessun Dorma.

On top of being a SHINee member, Onew has appeared in sitcoms and dramas, most notably as the clumsy Dr Lee Chi Hoon in Descendants of the Sun, which won him the Newcomer Scene Stealer Award at the 2016 Scene Stealer Festival. He also starred in the sitcom, Welcome To Royal Villa, and made cameo appearances in Dr. Champ, Athena: Goddess of War, Oh My God x2, and Pure Love, among others. Moreover, he took the lead roles in the musicals Brothers Were Brave and Rock of Ages.

In reality and variety shows, Onew is one of the few idols who gives the most painful ttakbams or forehead flicks. He is also known as a chicken maniac, even picking chicken over his Hello Baby son Yoogeun at one point. He has a penchant for singing trot or old music, saying that he grew up listening to them because of his parents. And he has a unique way of coming up with usernames for his (usually dormant) social media accounts.

From the talented young idol who was awkward with kids and trips over his own feet, Onew has grown into a fine gentleman who is about to enlist in the mandatory army service. Before he enters the camp, however, Onew has finally answered the prayers of Shawols by releasing his first mini-album!

Entitled VOICE, the long-awaited album is a showcase of his vocal color in the lyrics he penned. The album sold like hotcakes on pre-selling, topping the Synnara chart, and ranking in Hanteo charts as the second most sought-after Kpop album on the day of its release.

Here’s a look at his first mini album’s title track and music video!

We wish nothing but the best for SHINee’s adorable leader Onew at the military! Which is your favorite track from his first mini album? Let us know in the comments!
