The energy was high at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, just minutes before the start of MOMOLAND’s fan meeting. The group’s signature songs “BBoom BBoom” and “BAAM” reverberated throughout the arena, and the Filipino Merries wasted no time practicing their fan chants, even if the group was not yet there to perform.
Finally, the lights went off, and MOMOLAND’s first fan meeting began.
MOMOLAND became a household name in the beginning of 2018, when they released their single “Bboom Bboom”. Since then, they earned several number-one awards in music shows. And with “Bboom Bboom” carrying an addictive dance track, the song soon became a dance craze, inspiring idols and even non-fans to do their own take on the dance.
Filipinos in general love jumping in on the latest crazes, and that included “Bboom Bboom.” Combined with Filipinos’ love for K-Pop, it is no surprise, then, that MOMOLAND would hold their first-ever fan meeting in the country.
Though it was their third time coming to the Philippines, it was their first time holding a fan meeting in the country. The girls admitted to falling in love with the country, with plans to try halo-halo and to explore Boracay and Cebu when they are free. And a Filipino phrase they had recently learned? “Kain tayo! (Let’s eat!)”
Of course, something had to be said about Filipinos. Lead rapper Daisy described Filipino Merries as passionate and supportive. “We really feel their love when we are performing.”
And that was precisely what MOMOLAND saw that night: passion and support from their Filipino Merries.
The whole night was a message of thanks, of sorts, an appreciation for the Merries who supported MOMOLAND from their debut up to the present. The group also showed versatile performances, making a statement that they are more than just their hit single.
They started with performing cutesy songs, their initial image upon debut. It was fitting that they started with “Welcome to MOMOLAND”, followed by their first two singles, “Jjan! Koon! Kwang!” and “uh-gi-yeo-cha.”
A short break followed for the girls to introduce themselves to the crowd. Visual and center, Nancy, shared that they were excited to hold their first fan meeting.
What followed was a special segment in which MOMOLAND shared a series of candid photos, mostly selcas and photos with goofy poses. Filipino Merries were all in agreement that the girls look amazing, even if they are bare-faced and being silly.
When everyone has settled down during the talk segment, MOMOLAND energized the audience once more by performing the songs “Freeze” and “Wonderful Love.” Filipino Merries then get to see a more mellow side of MOMOLAND when they crooned the crowd with B-sides “Curious” and “Only One You.”
The surprise of the night came when MOMOLAND sang “Salamat” by Yeng Constantino. The girls then stood up and approached the fans, an apt gesture to thank them for their support.
Fortunately, there were more to come, and this time, it was the special stages promised by the girls. Ahin and Taeha sang “I Need You and Want You”, their OST to the drama Cross. Dancers Jane, Yeonwoo, and Nayun were sultry in their take of Girl’s Day’s sexy single “Something.” Meanwhile, Daisy, JooE, and Nancy capped off the special stages with 2NE1’s “Can’t Nobody.”
Fans got more performances, with MOMOLAND performing two more B-sides: “Orgel” and “Bingo Game.” After that, the girls expressed their thanks and a promise to come back.
Sadly, good things come to an end. However, MOMOLAND ended their fan meeting with a bang, performing their hits “BAAM” and “Bboom Bboom.” And as fans clamored for more, MOMOLAND returned for an encore with Camila Cabello’s “Havana.” They then went to interact with fans and receive gifts as “BAAM” and “Bboom Bboom” played in the background once more.
Overall, MOMOLAND clearly showed that they were more than just a group with a dance craze. If anything, they are ready to show the world that they are capable of so much more. And their fan meeting in Manila is clear proof that they have the versatility, and a growing number of fans, to back them up.
We would like to thank DnM Entertainment for giving us the opportunity to cover the event.
