It was a warm Sunday afternoon on March 24 as a crowd was forming at the bridgeway of SM North EDSA. Besides the usual crowd of Sunday mall-goers, there were some unusual things that definitely did not belong. Upon entry (or exit from the mall), one could immediately see a long line that didn’t seem to end. There were also people crowding around one of the outdoor tables at Gong Cha. Looking closely, one would notice that those fans are handing out slogans. Walking further along, one would have probably heard a fan shouting “Fan letter!” when waving around a piece of purple paper.
All these just lead to one final destination: Invitation to Nightmare City in Manila, Dreamcatcher’s first concert. After all, the concert was held at the SM North EDSA Sky Dome.
After a long period of waiting (and braving the unforgiving Manila heat), Dreamcatcher opened the show with “What”, automatically bringing the crowd to life. They followed it up with “Sleepwalking” and the track that marked their rebirth as Dreamcatcher: “Chase Me”.
The girls then introduced themselves to Filipino InSomnia, with Dami even introducing herself in Filipino and saying that she was interested in getting to know Filipino culture better. Meanwhile, both Yoohyeon and Gahyeon confirmed that they have both spent time in the Philippines before.
As the night progressed, fans were treated to more performances of Dreamcatcher’s hits such as “Fly High”, “Good Night”, “Lullaby”, “Wonderland”, “You and I”, and their latest single “Piri”. As they performed these songs, the girls were total girl-crush material who looked like they were going to slay anyone in their path.
However, during the ment segments, they were totally game for fooling around onstage! They even showed how excited they felt through body language. They also let Filipino InSomnia know how impressed they were with them! After all, the crowd was singing along with the girls! Dreamcatcher even asked Filipino InSomnia to sing “Lullaby” a capella!
Known for their on-point covers, Dreamcatcher prepared sub-unit performances that are exclusively for the Asia Tour! The girls revealed that they chose the songs themselves. Sua and Yoohyeon did a sexy and feminine version of Charlie Puth’s “Attention.” Fun fact: before the performance began, Sua complained that the mic stand was too high for her! Next, Siyeon, Gahyeon, and Handong performed a medley of Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me” and Boyfriend. Fans got to hear Gahyeon rap for the first time here! Finally, Jiu and Dami wanted to show off their cute and fun side with Flo Rida’s “I Don’t Like It I Love It”. Can we also give them all plus points for not changing the pronouns in any of the songs?
After singing “Over the Sky,” Jiu says, “Over the Sky is beautiful because it’s like a promise that we’ll come back again. We finally got to meet, and we wish to come back and see you again. InSomnia are lovely and you give us so much love.” She even asked to see the slogan again.
Because InSomnia give Dreamcatcher so much love, the girls wanted to give back that love to the fans through gifts! Lucky fans got to take home signed polaroids, which were shot when Dreamcatcher arrived at the concert venue, or a limited-edition copy of Dreamcatcher’s “Over the Sky.” The girls added that the song is special to them because they don’t get to perform it very often.
In order to choose a winner, the girls had to choose sections and seat numbers randomly. Other than requiring the fans to scream “AKO! (ME)” when they won, Dreamcatcher also encouraged the fans to react as extra as possible so that they’d know who the lucky InSomnia is! Sua even demonstrated an example.
Although the fans did as they were told, one reaction stood out among the rest. It was a resounding “P*******a!” that was audible throughout the venue. The lucky fan was kind enough to show us what she ended up winning: a signed polaroid of Sua! Congratulations again to all the lucky winners!
However, InSomnia couldn’t let the night end without greeting Handong a “Happy Birthday” (as she celebrates her birthday on March 26, which was yesterday!) The girls also thanked the users of MyMusicTaste, a crowd-sourcing platform for fans to request artists to come tour in their city, for making this all happen.
Before the show ended, the members of Dreamcatcher once again thanked Filipino InSomnia for a wonderful night with them.
Sua: Are you ready to cry? I’m happy because I got to see you. Even before the concert started, I appreciated your energy. I LOVE YOU!
Handong: InSomnia are so passionate. We were excited to see you. Please wait for us!
Siyeon: I’ve wanted to come to Manila for a long time. If we can spend vacation here for a day, but we can’t for now. Don’t be sad because we’ll be back!
Jiu: I never imagined I’d get to visit other countries after debut. But the fact I got to go here means fans from around the world support me right? Thank you to Filipino InSomnia.”
Yoohyeon: I may have been here before, but I always want to come back. Thank you so much for giving me a wonderful moment.
Gahyeon: Thank you to Filipino InSomnia for welcoming us. We will prepare more performances in the future. Please don’t get sick!
Dami: We celebrated our 800th day yesterday [March 23]. It’s because of you that’s why we’re here. I hope our relationship lasts forever!
How fitting that Dami mentioned their 800th day, because the girls wrapped up the show with their anniversary song “Full Moon”, before returning to the stage for the encore with “And There Was No One Left” and “Wake Up”.
Full disclosure: Before this concert, I was only vaguely aware of who Dreamcatcher was and liked some of their title tracks. However, this concert made me want to be an InSomnia. A group of beautiful and talented girls who know how to rock a show and appreciate their fans? Where do I sign up to join the fandom?
We would like to thank MyMusicTaste for inviting KStreetManila to cover the concert!
