Who’s Who at #KWMF2019: Kim Dong Han

K-Pop World Music Festival is coming to Manila in less than one month, and they’ll be bringing some familiar faces! The event will be on June 9, 2019 at the Mall of Asia Arena with Red Velvet, NCT 127, ELRIS, Sohee of ELRIS, and Kim Donghan.

As we approach D-Day, let’s get to know more of the groups who will be there, starting off with the only Produce 101 alumnus of the bunch, Kim Dong Han!

The Beginning: Produce 101

Born and raised in Daegu, Donghan first rose to mainstream popularity as a contestant on the second season of Produce 101. Here’s a clip of Donghan’s company audition to BTS’ “Blood, Sweat, & Tears” with OUI Entertainment labelmates Jang Daehyun (of now disbanded group RAINZ) and Jo Seongwook:

He had gotten more attention after being part of the legendary “Shape of You” dance stage during the position evaluation round.

Although he ended up in 29th place and getting eliminated right before the finale, Donghan had gotten enough of a following to be included in the fan-imagined group JBJ.

JBJ: Just Be Joyful

JBJ started out as a joke among the fans, but it became a reality due to excessive popular demand. The group debuted under Fave Entertainment on October 18, 2017 with their first mini-album Fantasy and promoted until April 2018, when their contracts expired.

It was during this promotion period with JBJ that Donghan showcased his skills as a performer. A true-blue ARMY, EXO-L, and Shawol, he can dance to EXO and BTS songs at two times the speed. After all, it only took him more or less a week to memorize EXO’s “Ko Ko Bop” choreography after the song was released.

Donghan has been to the country before, for the Manila leg of JBJ’s fan meet last year. (For more on Donghan’s stint with JBJ, please check out our features on them here and here.)

Future variety star

Donghan always expressed interest in appearing on more variety shows and has proven that he has the skills and humor for them. That rolling entrance JBJ did on their first ever Weekly Idol guesting? Yes, that was his idea.

He participated in “Gourmet Idols,” which tested his knowledge of food. He also participated in 1theK’s global web series “Dance War.”

However, his ultimate fanboy dreams came true during one particular variety show guesting. He had always expressed interest in wanting to appear on Idol Room, and it’s no secret that he looks up to SHINee’s Taemin. He got to appear on the February 12 episode of Idol Room with Taemin! They even got to dance “Goodbye” together! (Jump to the 10:10 mark in the video below.)

His latest project is a hosting gig for JTBC’s Beauty Room as one of the male hosts alongside T-ara’s Hyomin, Jun Hyosung, B1A4’s Gongchan, Laboum’s Solbin, rhythmic gymnast and bowler Shin Soo Ji, and model Jun Min Kyu. There, they will be sharing beauty tips for both men and women.

Going Solo

After JBJ’s contract expiration, OUI Entertainment announced that Donghan was going to debut as a soloist. He made his solo debut on June 19, 2018 with “Sunset,” an electronic dance track expressing the feelings of a man in the glow of the setting sun. The debut album also had tracks featuring JBJ95’s Sanggyun and Pentagon’s Wooseok.

The debut single received positive feedback from the public, including his first music show win on “The Show.”

Donghan then made his comeback with “Good Night Kiss” on October 17, 2018. Donghan participated in writing the lyrics to this dance track with a future bass retro sound.

What fans should anticipate is the performance for Donghan’s latest single, “Focus,” which just came out on May 1. The song’s lyrics tell the story of a man who has fallen for a woman and has his eyes glued to her like he’s addicted to her. With an addictive chorus and a beat that matches the powerful choreography, this is definitely a new side fans have never seen before. Fun fact: Donghan came up with the choreography!
