Unless you’re living under a rock, you have definitely heard of MOMOLAND. The nine-member girl group is known by many Filipinos, non-Hallyu fans included, due to the 2018 hit song “Bboom Bboom.” Such was the popularity of the song, it has been played in the streets, on various events, TV shows, radio, and at one point, even at a funeral procession.
MOMOLAND became even more famous with “Baam” which featured, among other things, the iconic Pinoy jeepney and Nancy carrying the Philippine flag as the group dance in their baro’t saya. Speaking of member Nancy, Filipinos also can’t help but associate her with actress Liza Soberano, who could easily be mistaken as her long-lost twin.

Members Hyebin, Yeonwoo, Jane, Nayun, JooE, Ahin, and Nancy got into the group through the MNet survival show Finding Momoland and made their debut with “Jjan! Koong! Kwang!” on November 10, 2016. Daisy and Taeha were added to the group a year later as the now-nine-member group promote “Freeze!” MOMOLAND then made their comeback with “Bboom Bboom” and “Baam” and, as they say, the rest is history. For the girls’ latest promotion for “I’m So Hot,” however, Taeha and Daisy weren’t able to participate due to health and personal reasons.
With three years of experience in the industry, not to mention the long training they endured pre-debut, there’s a lot more to MOMOLAND than their bubbly viral hits. Get your tickets, Merry-Go-Rounds, as we list down nine reasons to love MOMOLAND even more!
1. We international, baby!
And by that, we meant MOMOLAND can speak four languages aside from Korean, namely: English, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish. This is because some members have lived outside South Korea for a number of years before becoming idols. Nancy is half-American and spent her childhood in Ohio, USA. Daisy lived in Canada for more than a decade. Ahin, who can also converse in English, is fluent in Mandarin after residing and studying in China for a long time. In addition to that, she can speak a little bit of Spanish. Meanwhile, Jane can speak Japanese.
Here’s an old clip of Ahin introducing herself in three languages (starting from 0:53).
2. True-blue entertainers
K-pop idols, of course, are expected to be all-rounders, and MOMOLAND members have lived up to this standard by being active in the industry. JooE is practically everywhere, participating in variety shows either as MC or fixed cast member, including Get It Beauty 2018, School Attack 2018, JTBC’s Fallen For You with Jung Hyungdon and Jung Sewoon, and Kim Saeng Min’s Veteran. She is also featured in different CFs, such as Tropicana, Baker7, Kakao’s “Friends Marble,” and Yungjin Glonsan Vermont with Seo Jang Hoon. Meanwhile, Nancy was a fixed cast member of Tooniverse’s Nangam School Season 2 and Mak Irae Show Season 2-5 before MOMOLAND and hosted Arirang’s Pops in Seoul with Daisy in 2018.
3. Reality show survivors
Aside from being formed by a survival show, MOMOLAND has also participated in other competitions. Nancy auditioned for Korea’s Got Talent back in 2011 as part of the four-member hip-hop dance group Cutiepies. Taeha was in Produce 101 Season 1 before joining MOMOLAND. Both JooE and Ahin showcased their vocals in King of Masked Singer as “Helicopter” and “Fortune Cookie,” respectively.
Here’s Ahin’s beautiful rendition of Akdong Musician’s “Last Goodbye” with “Chain Letter,” who was later revealed to be former BAP member Youngjae!
4. Drama and MV stars
While Yeonwoo’s appearance in the drama Mung Bean Chronicles did not push through due to health reasons, she was later confirmed for the new tvN series Cheap Chollima Mart. Nayun starred in web drama Anniversary Anyway with PENTAGON’s Hongseok and UP10TION’s Gyujin. Nancy was in the web music drama Thumb Light with former ZE:A member Minwoo.
Moreover, Nancy appeared in SNUPER’s Stand By Me MV and MC GREE’s Dangerous MV. Hyebin, Yeonwoo, and JooE, on the other hand, were in Kim Youngchul’s star-studded Andenayon MV.
5. Almosts and would-have-beens
Had circumstances been a little bit different, our girls would not have been in the group, and that’s going to be so sad!
MOMOLAND members were trainees in different agencies before moving to MLD Entertainment. Yeonwoo was in Pledis and MBK, Jane in SS Entertainment, Taeha in Starship, Daisy in JYP Entertainment, and Nancy in Nega Network.
This means Taeha almost debuted with WJSN. Had Daisy not left JYPE, she would have been a participant in Sixteen, the show that created TWICE. Daisy had actually been eliminated from Finding Momoland, but fate had its way, and she was reinstated in the group. JooE joined Duble Kick merely a month before Finding Momoland─meaning if she had been a little late, she might not have been able to participate in the show.
6. Miss Congeniality
The girls of MOMOLAND, as adorable as they are, are well-connected in the K-pop scene. First of all, Taeha is Xia Junsu’s cousin. Jane’s squad includes PRISTIN’s Roa and Yuha, GFRIEND’s Yuju, Oh My Girl’s Binnie, Dreamcatcher’s Dami, and Uni.T’s Yebin. Daisy’s JYPE past brought forth her friendship with TWICE’s Chaeyoung, Momo, and Tzuyu, former IOI member Jeon Somi, April’s Naeun, and PENTAGON’s Yuto. Nancy is close with LOONA’s Hyunjin, KNK’s Seoham, and MYTEEN’s Yuvin. It also appears Nancy and SEVENTEEN’s Vernon (who is also part-American) knew each other, having worked together as models in the past.

7. Extra activities
With nine members come nine different quirks! Leader Hyebin and maknae Nancy used to be models. Hyebin and Jane are also known for speaking at LTE speeds. JooE knows judo and is interested in fashion. Ahin likes running, with a record of 14 seconds in a 100-metre run. Daisy can dance ballet, while Yeonwoo is good at drawing.

8. Successful fangirl
Another specialty that a MOMOLAND member has is photography! Merry-deul would know that Jane has admitted to being a “home master” or admin once for Baby’s Breath, a fansite dedicated to Infinite’s L and Sunggyu. She said she grew an interest in taking portraits because of her father who was a photographer.
Here’s a video of Jane and Sunggyu standing side by side in a music show. Sana all! We definitely hope she gets to meet L too!
9. Hearts of gold
As MOMOLAND graces our shores for the second time for Good Friends in Manila, it has been reported that the girls will donate their profits from the show to Filipino children in need.
This charity act will benefit the kids from two barangays in Antipolo City. MOMOLAND’s agency has said the members have been looking for ways they could give back to the Filipino community for the warm support they have received from the fans.
We’re a few days away from Good Friends in Manila! Head over to Smart Araneta Coliseum on October 5 and see live performances from MOMOLAND, Ha Sungwoon, and Kim Jaehwan! Tickets are still available in TicketNet outlets and website.
