In case you missed it, TV network GMA-7 is planning to air their remake of the hit Korean drama Descendants of the Sun.
GMA-7 is all-out in producing the remake, going so far as to partner with the Armed Forces of the Philippines so the cast can undergo military and medical training.
The network also went all out in their casting, placing Dingdong Dantes as the lead role of Captain Yoo Shi Jin a.k.a. Big Boss (originally played by Song Joong Ki). He is joined by Rocco Nacino Smith and Jasmine Curtis-Smith as Master Sergeant Seo Daeyoung (originally played by Jin Goo) and First Lieutenant Yoon Myungju (originally played by Kim Jiwon).
But the question in everyone’s minds was: Who will be filling the role of Doctor Kang Mo Yeon?
Although there had been speculations, GMA-7 finally confirmed it: Beauty will be played by none other than Jennylyn Mercado!
In an interview at the October 3 Chika Minute segment of the news show 24 Oras, Jennylyn shared that she did not expect to be chosen for the role, as the DotS Philippines cast was already training while she was still filming for the drama Love You Two.
She had already started medical training in preparation for her role, and she is doing her best to study the character originally played by Song Hye Kyo.
This is not the first time Jennylyn will be playing a lead in a K-Drama remake. She was the lead actress in GMA’s remake of My Love from the Star as Steffi Chavez or Cheon Song Yi, originally played by Jun Ji Hyun.
However, Descendants of the Sun will be Jennylyn and Dingdong’s first drama project as a love team. They previously worked together in the 2005 series Encantadia, but as a father-daughter duo. Recently, they were the hosts of the seventh season of StarStruck, a show that Jennylyn won in 2003.
What do you think of Jennylyn as Dr. Kang? Her leading man is certainly practicing for their first scene together!
