5 DEAN Songs You Need to Add to Your Playlist

Starting his music career at age 6there was so much potential for Seoul-born singer-songwriter Kwon Hyuk. By 20, he was writing for EXO, Justin Bieber, and VIXX, just to name a few. Then in 2015, he finally debuted — no longer “just a name” behind the song. This time, the songs are fully his. They are him. And he went with the name DEAN.

In case you have not heard of him, DEAN is a South Korean alternative R&B singer-songwriter. He debuted on March 25, 2015, although his first EP came out a year later, and since then, he has released singles and collaborations that have become quick favorites among slow hip hop and neo soul fans. Exactly five years later, he still is one of the most popular R&B artists in the Korean music scene.

To celebrate the five years he’s blessed us with good music, we picked five DEAN songs we believe you should listen to and add to your playlist!

1. D (Half Moon)

130 mood: TRBL (2016)

One of DEAN’s most iconic songs, “D (Half Moon)” is an easy favorite for its soulful feel. While it can be a little over the place, it is actually one of its charms!

2. instagram

instagram (2017)

Still bearing the classic deep and smooth signature, “instagram” is a great song to relax to. Not to mention that this is a socially relevant song talking about self-comparison in social media.

3. 하루살이 (dayfly)

dayfly (2018)

DEAN gets a little more personal, a bit dark, too. It’s a poetic way of DEAN, alongside Rad Museum and the late artist Sulli, talking about sadness and the emotional realities of life.

4. Howlin’ 404

Howlin’ 404 (2019)

This song showcases DEAN’s vocal flexibility and prowess. The music itself leans on the heavy, dark feel, but it still gives a raw, emotional hit to anyone who listens.

5. Bonny & Clyde

130 Mood; TRBL (2016)

Another iconic song from his first extended play, “Bonnie & Clyde” is crisp, sharp, and sexy with a really unique chorus. It gives off a rather lonely vibe, but it’s still beautiful.

DEAN’s a favorite among other artists, which explains why he’s featured in many different tracks! We picked two extra songs we think showcased his two sides through these!

1. Starlight

Taeyeon feat. DEAN (2016)

2. Bermuda Triangle

ZICO feat. DEAN, Crush (2016)
