7 Covers That Will Make You Stan LOONA

Blockberry Creative was on to something when they decided to come up with a concept that revealed one girl per month before introducing the entire group. It corresponds with their Korean name Idarui Sonyeo (이달의 소녀) or “Girl of the Month”. Their English name comes from the Hangul letters ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ, when rearranged forms as LOONA.

After each girl was individually introduced via solo songs and sub-units, Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul, Yeojin, Vivi, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Gowon, and Olivia Hye have made their official debut as a group on August 20, 2018.

With how often Orbit say “Stan LOONA” on social media, there’s no doubt that LOONA is one of the most popular girl groups among international fans. In fact, they have even caught the attention of SM Entertainment’s Lee Soo Man. If that’s not proof of their potential, we don’t know what is.

The group’s covers are one of the most fun things to watch. It’s interesting to see how the girl group always manages to put their unique spin to any song given to them, so we have chosen some of our favorite covers from the multi-talented girl group.

For simplicity’s sake, I only chose complete song/dance covers. In other words, Heejin and Yves’ “Jopping” cover is everything, but I can’t be the only one who needs a full version of it, right?

1. Sorry Sorry by Super Junior

For a girl group as big as they are in number, it only makes sense for them to cover a Super Junior song. This is a different sound from what fans used to hearing from them. I dare say that they did the iconic song justice. Besides, I think they look amazing in those suits.

2. Cherry Bomb by NCT 127

There’s no doubt, this is one of the group’s most popular dance covers. The girls made it their own and proved that they can slay any choreography thrown their way. It’s so popular that it caught even Lee Soo Man’s attention and made him want to work with them. (Full disclosure: it’s the one that finally made me pay attention to LOONA.)

3. Eclipse by GOT7

In this one, LOONA shows off how they can make any dance work for them. They took a dance meant for seven members and managed to accommodate the entire group. Would it hurt to wish for choreography similar to this for LOONA’s next comeback?

4. Full Moon by Sunmi

I love this song, so it was interesting to see how the girls were going to divide it among five of them. I never knew I needed a vampire concept for the girls until we saw this stage. This entire performance was just *chef’s kiss*

5. Not Today by BTS

Another one of the group’s more iconic covers, this is a departure from any of the concepts LOONA has tried before. Most KCon goers (and those who have watched the performance online) agreed that LOONA nailed the song. It’s probably the performance that convinced people that LOONA was not here to play around and that it was time to pay attention.

6. Love Battery by Hong Jin Young

People usually see dance covers from LOONA, so having them on Immortal Song was a treat. Sure, not all 12 of them were there, but we will take what we can get. It was interesting to see how LOONA was going to make the popular trot song work for them. Apparently, they performed this after only 10 hours of practice. *applause*

7. Misty Road by Ben

It was a treat for our ears to have some of LOONA’s best vocalists perform this one. Personally, I’d love to hear LOONA perform more ballads if they will sound as good as this cover. If this is a preview of how LOONA the Ballad was supposed to sound like, then give it to the masses ASAP! (Err… Preferably when vocal queen Haseul is back from her hiatus.)

With the diversity of LOONA’s covers, it’s easy to see why they are a group to watch. They have showed that they are capable of doing almost every genre given to them. It’s only been two years, and they have all the potential to make it to the top. I wouldn’t be surprised if, eventually, LOONA becomes one of the top girl groups of their generation.

Happy 2nd anniversary, LOONA! Orbit, what’s your favorite LOONA cover?
