Here’s what to expect in Netflix’s “Kingdom: Ashin of the North”

The writer and director of critically acclaimed Netflix original series, Kingdom, teased some exciting details on Kingdom: Ashin of the North!

Included in a sneak peak to Netflix Korea’s upcoming 2021 releases, writer Kim Eun Hee and director Kim Sung Hoon shared on why they decided to release a sidequel or spin-off before the premiere of the much-awaited Season 3.

Writer Kim Eun Hee shared that in writing the story about Ashin, she realized that she had to touch on the saengsacho (the resurrection plant), a vital component in the Kingdom series. “I think that it would be more apt to tackle it in a special episode, rather than just incorporating into the regular season. Just to make it more interesting.”

Director Kim Sung Hoon added, “Kingdom Season 1 laid the groundwork for the Kingdom world, the Kingdom universe. In effect, Kingdom: Ashin of the North serves a building block, placed on that foundation, on what to expect in Season 3.”

In regards to Ashin, played by Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Eun Hee described, “Based on her garments, you can see that she is from the Northern tribe of the Yalu river. She’s a descendant from the tribe there. She is the lead and the clue to the mystery of the saengsacho (the resurrection plant).”

In regards to working with Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Sung Hoon shared, “When we first filmed in Jeju Island, everyone, including myself, instantly knew why she’s received so much love from the global audience. You will be able to see more of her brilliant acting in Kingdom: Ashin of the North.”

In addition, Park Byung Eun will be returning as Min Chi Rok, who we also saw in Season 2. “He is the master of fishing who resides in Jeju Island. He has extensive experience in sea fishing, and his physique is made up of all that athletic experience. He will make a big presence in Ashin of the North,” the director shared.

Director Kim Sung Hoon confirmed that filming for the special episode has already wrapped up, and they are currently in the post-production stage.

Kingdom: Ashin of the North will most likely be released within the year.

Kingdom is available for streaming on Netflix.
